The history of the Musée Jacquemart-André is fundamentally a story of an extraordinary 19th-century power couple: Edouard André, a wealthy banker and scion of a Protestant family, and Nélie Jacquemart, an accomplished society portraitist. Built between 1869 and 1875 by architect Henri Parent, the mansion was designed specifically to showcase the couple’s vast collection and to host the most prestigious social gatherings of the Second Empire. Unlike other public institutions, the collection here was built through decades of 'artistic honeymoon' voyages to Italy, where the couple acquired rare masterpieces by Botticelli, Donatello, and Mantegna, effectively creating a 'little Italy' in the heart of Paris.
The architecture itself reflects a shift toward eclectic luxury, featuring a double-spiral staircase of stone, iron, and glass that leads to the monumental Music Room and the State Apartments. The layout was innovative for its time, designed to allow high-capacity social events while maintaining private quarters that remained shielded from the public eye. Upon Edouard’s death, Nélie dedicated her remaining years to completing the collection before bequeathing the entire estate to the Institut de France. Today, the museum preserves the original 19th-century domestic settings, ensuring that the paintings by Rembrandt and Van Dyck are seen exactly where their owners intended. The integration of a magnificent Winter Garden and the preservation of the 18th-century French furniture collections make it a unique hybrid of a historic house museum and a world-class art gallery.
